Burlington County Library System Presents CROWNS

Friday, March 21st at 8pm
Saturday, March 22nd & Sunday, March 23rd at 2pm

The Bridge Players Theatre Company presents Crowns, a moving and celebratory play by Regina Taylor of I’ll Fly Away fame. In the play women’s hats become the springboard for an exploration of black history and identity, as seen through the eyes of Yolanda, a standoffish young black woman who has come to the South to stay with her grandmother after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. There is a hat for every occasion, from flirtng, to churchgoing, to funerals, to baptisms, and the tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery and through the New Testament and current fashion. Through dialogue and rousing renditions of classic gospel songs, the play follows Yolanda’s journey as she learns to embrace hats and their cultural significance as part of her own fiercely independent identity. Tickets are required for admittance. Tickets will be available beginning March 1st for $5 and may be purchased at the Library Headquarters in Westampton.
